Duane Langer, age 74, of Gettysburg, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 at the Gettysburg Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 20 at Grace Bible Church, Gettysburg. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery with Military Honors.
Joseph Duane Langer was born Sept 7, 1938 to Bill and Thelma (Ensley) Langer in Ainsworth, Nebraska.
Duane graduated from Ainsworth High School.  He went into the Navy from 1957 until 1959 and then went to Remington Rand Univac School in Utica, New York, and also worked on computers at the San Diego Military Base in California. He later worked for Clary Data Comp and they sent him to New Jersey.
He and Hazel eloped on Dec. 12, 1962 in Pierre, South Dakota as they went through from California to New Jersey.  They lived in New Jersey for 11 years. Their son, John David, and daughter, Lora Lee, were born in New Jersey.
Duane and Hazel moved to Winner, South Dakota, 40 years ago, during the Rapid City Flood.  Duane joined a cousin in the Typewriter Mart for a year and then he and Hazel bought the Westside Market in Winner.  Later they sold that store and joined John and Jill at Langer’s Family Foods in Gettysburg, South Dakota.
He was active over the years in Elks club, Sunday school, his church, Winner stock car, and being a Christian youth leader.  He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, rock collecting, camping, bowling, and traveling.  He absolutely loved going to Hawaii and had traveled to 49 states, only missing Alaska.  He also thoroughly enjoyed his sports teams including the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, San Diego Chargers, and the Nebraska Corn Huskers.
Duane and Hazel would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on Dec. 12, 2012.  He cherished every minute with his wife, kids, and grandchildren. In his last act of kindness, Duane was a tissue donor.
Duane is survived by his wife, Hazel of Gettysburg; son John (Jill) of Gettysburg; daughter Lora (Brad) Hazelrigg of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren: James (Jaymi), Megan, Justine, Matthew, Jacob, and Joshua; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Fredrickson and LaRayne (Doug) Halligan; brothers-in-law: Kenny (Connie), Larry and Ernest Marvin and Don Denny; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sandra, brother Larry and niece Michelle.
Memorials will go to missionaries and church planting.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Duane’s arrangements.
