Irene Hamburger, 88, of rural Seneca, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 21 at Grace Bible Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Ken Cartlidge officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.
Irene Born was born on July 13, 1924 to Alex and Selma (Yauck) at home near Follett, TX. She received her education at a country school in the Follett area.
On Aug. 1, 1946, Irene was united in marriage to Harvey Hamburger in Follett, TX.  They made their home eight miles south of Darrouzett, TX, where he farmed and ranched. While in Texas, their little family grew to five as three beautiful children were born: Mildred, Martha, and Philip.
In 1956, they followed Harvey’s father and brothers north, transplanting the family to Lebanon, SD. While in Lebanon, another son, Elmer, joined the family.  In 1959, they purchased the Walt Hall place, southwest of Seneca, SD, where they built their home and farm. Harvey raised crops and livestock and Irene selflessly gave of her many talents to her family. She provided love to each and every one of them through their meals. Irene gardened, canned, and baked; and also raised chickens, milked cows and helped butcher beef.
Harvey was active in the construction of new homes and churches and Irene was always there as a partner. She helped with painting, varnishing, staining and whatever other details needed to be taken care of. She also enjoyed her time working with her hands; sewing, crocheting and quilting.
Irene’s life was a testimony to the Lord Jesus Christ. She spent time daily in prayer and devotions and faithfully served at Grace Bible Church. She was active in the Sunday School and Awana Program for many years.
Irene is survived by her daughters: Mildred (Rich) Richer of Miller, Martha (Gaven) Banik of Sioux Falls; sons: Philip (Barbara) and Elmer (Cecelia) of Seneca; brothers: Leroy (Gertrude) born of Darouzett, TX and Harry (Lillian) born of Follett, TX; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Willie (Darlene) Hamburger, Jean Hamburger of California, Melvin Hamburger of Gettysburg and Naomi (Wayne) Johnson of Dallas, TX; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; and her infant sons: Steven and Randy.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Irene’s arrangements. (www.familyfuneralhome.net)
