Battlers have big homecoming win
Friday the 13th was a lucky night for the Potter County Battlers, as they defeated the Timber Lake Panthers in homecoming football action by a score of 45-13.
It was a beautiful night for football as the game ball was presented to the referees by GHS Homecoming King and Queen, Aaron Beetsch and Kelcey Robbennolt.
Quarterback and kicker Chayce Hall put the ball into play for the home team.
It only took four downs for each team with a swap in possessions before Tanner Heuer picked off an interception and stepped into the endzone with a defensive touchdown. Chayce Hall kicked it through the uprights for another point, and with 7:09 left in the first quarter, the Battlers were on the board 7-0.
Timber Lake started with a first and 10 on their 11 yard line. A juggled handoff a couple plays into the drive was recovered by Michael Rausch for the Battlers, and in less than a minute from their first TD, Hayden Simon moved in for another six points. The kick was no good, so the Battlers settled for a 13-0 lead.
It didn’t take long for Chayce Hall to connect with Michael Rausch on a 49 yard TD, followed by a kick through the uprights and the Battlers were up 20-0 with a little over three minutes left in the quarter.
Lucas Vogel hauled in a pass in the corner of the endzone for another six points, and while Chayce Hall’s kick went wide right, the Potter County team moved the score to 26-0 with a few seconds left in the first.
Timber Lake was in possession of the ball at the start of the second quarter and they made their first down of the game, but the ball was soon turned over on downs at their 40, giving the Battlers some good field position as they headed toward the goal line. The offensive line opened up a big hole for Colten Hall, who took it in from 24 yards out for a touchdown. Chayce Hall put up another point through the uprights, and the home team spread the score 33-0.
A fake punt gave the Panthers their second first down of the ball game as they made their drive down field. They moved the chains a couple more times into Potter County territory before Mitch Hinckley, playing middle linebacker, picked off an interception. Caleb Meinke moved in at the quarterback position, taking the team into halftime.
The Battlers recieved the ball to start the second half and turned the drive into a score with QB Chayce Hall connecting with Lucas Vogel in the endzone from six yards out. The kick was blocked, so the Battlers put a little more distance between their competitors with a score of 39-0.
Timber Lake burned up a bunch of time in the third quarter, making the best of their next possession by scoring on a touchdown and adding a kick to it, putting the Panthers on the board 39-7.
The final quarter of the game started with the Battlers holding the ball. Colten Hall took the ball into the endzone, but a flag on the play called it back on a holding penalty. Ryan Sundberg went up the gut from three yards out and added another touchdown to the game. The kick was blocked, so the Battlers stretched the score to 45-7.
The Panthers put together a drive that burned up a bunch of what time was left on the clock, putting up a nice pass that put them close to the endzone with 11 seconds left. They moved it into the corner of the end zone from nine yards out, and a blocked kick left the score at 45-13 and five seconds from the gun.
The game ended and the Battlers moved their season to a 3-0 record. Next week they head to the north side of Potter County to celebrate Hoven’s Homecoming with a game against Leola/Frederick. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
