Photo G13-24 (Gene Sloat)crGene Sloat, age 88, of Gettysburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.
Charles Gene Sloat was born April 5, 1925 in Gettysburg to Charles Benjamin and Alma (Stocker) Sloat. He attended country school and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1943.
Gene farmed and ranched the Sloat Angus Ranch from 1946 until 1983. He was one of the largest Angus breeders in the U.S. during the 1950’s/1980’s.
In 1947, Gene married Dorothy Fransen in Gettysburg and to this union five children were born.
Gene opened the Westside Antiques and Furniture Restoration Business in 1975, which he operated until 2012.
On Dec. 15, 1987, Gene was united in marriage to Silvia Beringer in Ft. Pierre. She joined him in the antique business.
Gene’s hobbies included collecting antiques, firearms, coins and duck decoys. He was an avid hunter, trapper and hunting guide. Gene belonged to the S.D. Farm Bureau Federation, served as a school board member for Lowell Township, was a Gettysburg Methodist Church board of director, Sunday school superintendant and teacher, and a member of the church choir. Gene was also an active member in the Republican Party serving as a delegate to the State Republican Convention.
Gene’s life will be cherished by his wife Silvia of Gettysburg; his children: Dan (Deb) Sloat of Helena, MT, Judy (Frank) Pearman of Babson Park, FL, Gail (Ron) Larson of Gettysburg, Carol (Jim) Zimmerman of Olivia, TX, and Connie Loewenberg (Bill St. Clair) of Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; four step sons; four step grandchildren and one sister, Fay Bice of Rapid City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Veda Mueller; brothers-in-law, Al Mueller and Stan Bice and many aunts and uncles.
