Dr. Orval Van Deest, Professor Emeritus at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, will portray Hugh Glass, the Mountain Man who in 1823 was mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead, but crawled his way to survival 250 miles and lived to tell the tale.
This historical performance will be presented at 2 p.m. at the Dakota Sunset Museum on Sunday, Sept. 29.
Dr. Van Deest will also present two performances at the Gettysburg School on Sept. 30.
Dr. Van Deest is a South Dakota native and has done extensive work in public humanities programs in South Dakota and across the mountain plains. In 1984 and 1985 he toured South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and North Dakota with the Mountain Plains Chautauqua.
