Potter County Battlers give Coach Smith 100th career win

Share

The Yellowstone Trail Conference game ended early Friday night at Battler Field and pretty much everybody got some play time when Potter County shut out McLaughlin/Wakpala.  The “mercy rule” sent the visitors home after the half with a score of 56-0 and gave Coach Vern Smith his 100th victory with the Mighty Battlers.
The Battler starters got in only eight plays on defense and three on offense that night, which gave lots of the team an opportunity for field time.
The first score of the night came from a 35 yard run by Hayden Simon for the Battlers. Chayce Hall kicked through the goal posts to add another point, and Potter County was up by seven.
Ryan Sundberg put it in the endzone from 17 yards out for another Battler touchdown, and a kick by Hall bumped the score to 14.
A 47 yard punt return by Colton Hall added six more points to the Battler side of the scoreboard, and they couldn’t make good on the extra point so the score stood, briefly, at 20-0.
Some of the younger Battlers took to the field, with Caleb Meinke taking the quarterback position. He connected on an eight yard pass to Tanner Storer for a touchdown, and the quarterback ran it into the endzone for another two points. The first quarter of play ended with the Battlers up 28-0.
During the second quarter, Coach Smith went even deeper on the Battler bench. Meinke put up another touchdown on a 23 yard run, but the PAT didn’t happen. The spread increased to 34-0.
Storer made a big 48 yard run for his second TD of the night, before Chris Zuber added two more to the board on a pass play from Jacob Rausch. The score stood at 42-0.
The next two touchdowns came from runs by Tim Heien, who first punched his way into the endzone on a 15 yard run, and repeated his performance on a 28 yard run for an additional six points. The last one was capped by a two point run from Luke Smith, making a final score at halftime of 56-0.
The “mercy rule” takes place if one team is ahead by 45 points after playing the first half of football.
Game day is moved up to Thursday this week, when Potter County hosts their final game of the regular season at Battler Field. They play Faulkton with kickoff at 7 p.m. The team heads into playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
