Potter County Battlers advance to semi-finals Saturday

Share

Potter County hosted the second round of 9A football playoff action on Monday night at Battler Field in Gettysburg.
When the Battler kick went out of bounds to start the game, they opted to re-kick rather than take the penalty, and started out taking possession with an on side kick. That didn’t last long, as the Herreid/Selby Wolverines recovered a fumble. From there the teams went back and forth with their fourth and punts, until the Wolverines were in a second and 22. A run over 30 yards took them into the end zone to put the first score on the board, and a kick through the uprights added another point, giving Herreid/Selby the lead at 0-7 with just over seven minutes in the first quarter.
Quarterback Chayce Hall made a big run to the 11 yard line to set up a fresh set of downs close to the goal. The drive ended with an interception in the end zone and the Wolverines moving out to the 20 yard line on a touchback.
The Battler defense went to work, with Lucas Vogel sacking the QB and stopping the next play to force another punt from Herreid/Selby. Tanner Heuer took the ball and moved it deep into the scoring side of the field, and Hall did a tuck and run to move the chains. The quarter ended with the Battlers just a few feet from the end zone.
Hayden Simon punched in the one yard touchdown to start the second quarter, and Colton Hall followed it in with a two point conversion, giving the Battlers the lead at 8-7.
The Wolverines soon turned the ball over on a fumble and the Battlers took over around the Wolverine 40. Colton Hall ran up the gut close to the first down, and a face mask penalty against Herreid/Selby moved Potter County closer to the goal line. Simon and Mitch Hinckley both got their hands on the ball and chewed up some more of the field. Chayce Hall pulled the ball and called his own number to head across the line for an eight yard touchdown run. He couldn’t connect with Heuer for the extra two points, so the score went to 14-7 with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
A screen pass to Simon moved the ball to the 24. The score happened when the Hall brothers connected on a nice pass play. Ryan Sundberg was just short of the extra points, and the Battlers spread the lead to 20-7.
The Wolverines put together their drive but on a fourth and four, turned the ball over on downs on the Battler 47.
Four downs later, the Wolverines took possession on a Battler turnover.
They put the boot to the ball and punted it back to Potter County where the Battlers took over with their back against their goal posts just before heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter was dominated by the Wolverines and a slow, steady drive toward the goal posts. A quarterback keeper slipped in six points on the corner of the end zone. The kick was blocked and the score tightened to 20-13.
With the Battlers in control of the ball, Hinckley bulled his way up the center and moved the line of scrimmage midfield, but despite a nice couple drives, a holding penalty pulled them back. The home team was in a fourth and 17 situation, and a bad snap to the punter ended up with Chayce Hall moving the team down the field, but not enough to keep the  ball. It was turned over on downs on the Wolverine side of the field when the next play ended up with a 60 yard touchdown run for the score, followed by a kick to tie the game at 20 all to end the third quarter.
The Battlers first play of the final quarter moved the ball over 30 yards on a QB keeper and tucked the team into the Wolverine side of the field. Vogel connected on a 45 yard pass play, putting in another touchdown for the Battlers. The run was stopped short of the extra two points, so the Battlers settled for another six points putting the score at 26-20.
The Wolverines brought the kick back to the 20, with Dalton Storer, the only Battler left between Herreid/Selby and the goal line, pulling him down by the shoelaces. An encroachment penalty by the Battlers moved the Wolverines up close to a score. The defense held them hard but Herreid/Selby was able to sweep into the corner for a touchdown. Despite a false start penalty pushing the kick back, they kicked in an extra point and took the lead for the first time since the first quarter at 26-27.
The Battlers took over on their own 20. On the second play of the drive, Hall passed way down field to Heuer, who picked it off around the 30 and ran, untouched, into the end zone. Hall couldn’t put the extra two points together, so the Battlers moved ahead 32-27.
With just over five minutes left in the game, an on side kick by Potter County was recovered by Herreid/Selby.
Simon made a big quarterback sack to put the Wolverines into punt formation, which gave the Battlers the ball with four minutes remaining in the game.
Sundberg earned the big piece of meat when he pushed a 75 yard run up the middle with no one near him to put another touchdown on the board. No extra point materialized, so the Battlers settled for a score of 38-27.
An on-side kick by the Battlers went to the Wolverines at their 46. A failed lateral pass was scooped and scored by Chayce Hall for Potter County. The extra point didn’t happen, so the score moved to 44-27 with just under two minutes in the game.
The on side kick was recovered by the Wolverines. They moved within field goal range and put one between the uprights in the final seconds of the game to tighten the final score to 44-30.
The Battlers will travel to play Howard on Saturday for the semi-finals with kickoff at 7 p.m.
