Photo G14-08 (Alta Shaw)crAlta R. Shaw, 91 of Gettysburg, died Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 7 at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.
Alta Rose Thompson was born May 22, 1922 in Gettysburg, SD to Adam and Lula (Payne) Thompson. She attended school at the Gettysburg Elementary and Gettysburg High School.
On Dec. 24, 1939, Alta was united in marriage to Lloyd Shaw at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. Together they owned and operated the Wilson Motel in Redfield, the Ring Neck Café, Sunset Café and the Medicine Rock Café in Gettysburg.
She loved to spend time reading, attending rummage and auction sales, working in her flower gardens, bird watching, collecting angels and spending time with family and friends.
Alta was a member of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Her life will be cherished by her children: Sheron Archer Jost of Gettysburg, Vicki (Shorty) Tassler of Pierre and John W. (Lisa) Shaw of Creston, IA; one son-in-law, Duane Puffer of Redfield; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Alta was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd; daughter Lila Puffer; great-granddaughter Crystal Paxton; sisters, Mamie Rogers and Velda Axsom; brothers, George and Ernie Thompson; three nieces; and two sons-in-law, Stan Archer and Jim Jost.
