| 3/25/2009 1:52:00 PM | Email this article Print this article | Clara Holzwarth Mass of Christian Burial for Clara Holzwarth 85 of Selby was March 23, 2009 at St Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby. Fr. Mike Kelly and Fr. Tom Podimattam officiated. Burial was at the Gettysburg Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mrs. Holzwarth died March 18 at the Bowdle Nursing Home in Bowdle, SD.
Clara (Raba) Holzwarth was born in rural Walworth County, SD on May 4, 1923. She was one of 10 children born to the late John and Julia (Bertha) Raba. The family lived in the Spring Valley district near Java, SD and Clara attended the West Spring Valley Grade School. Following grade school Clara worked for the George Mickelsons, taking care of Speaker (George Jr.), former Governor of South Dakota and doing house work. She had many memorable experiences while working there.
She married Edgar Holzwarth of Gettysburg on Jan. 11, 1942. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union. Edgar and Clara lived on a farm NW of Gettysburg for 28 years. While the kids were growing up Clara was an Assistant Leader of 4-H and Farmers Union Youth Groups. She was a member of the Appomattox Extension Club of Gettysburg for many years. She was also a very active member of the Zion Ev. Lutheran church in Akaska. In 1968 they moved to a farm 4 1/2 miles SE of Selby. While living in Selby Clara was a member of the Selby Women's club, St. Anthony's Altar Society and also worked at the Beren's Café for many years.
In 1991, they retired from farming and moved into an apartment in Selby which was her home until going to the Nursing Home.
During her marriage, Clara received her high school diploma through a correspondence course and then attended the Pierre School of Nursing, graduating as an LPN. She had always wanted to be a nurse. Clara worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby, The Mobridge Care Center and the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven and the Gettysburg Hospital.
After her retirement Clara volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center and was named Volunteer of the year in 2002. She enjoyed reading and traveling. She and Edgar took many bus tours. She became a resident of the Bowdle Nursing home in September of 2006.
She is survived by her children Wayne (Georgia) Holzwarth of Gettysburg, SD, Claire Marie (Jerry) German of Oaks, ND and Susan (Dennis) Schneider of Selby, SD eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother Joe (Darlene) Raba of Selby. one brother-in-law: Eldore Holzwarth and one sister-in-law; Erma Holzwarth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1995, son Lyle in 1967, two granddaughters, five brothers and three sisters.
