Barbara Barb Ward-Doherty, 84, died March 13, 2012, at the Brookings hospital. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph¹s Indian School or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Barbara Ann Ward-Doherty was born on June 25, 1927, to Edward and Dagmar (Andersen) Ward in Bryant where she attended grade school and high school. She attended Northwestern University and the College of Saint Catherine. She graduated with a B.A. in psychology and biology. She worked for the American National Red Cross. She married Richard (Dick) Doherty on May 25,
1954 in Bryant. Barb received a master¹s degree in counseling from SDSU and a doctoral degree (E.Ed.) from USD in counseling and psychology. She became the first woman counselor at SDSU. She worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Nursing. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year at SDSU on six different occasions. She volunteered with the Brookings Municipal Utilities Board, the St. Thomas More Parish Council, and was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader in Brookings, Bryant, Germany, and Taiwan. Barb also was the chair of the Chinese Army Orphanage while living in Taiwan.
She is survived by their six children: Gettysburg school superintendent Brian E. Doherty (Kimberly) of Fort Pierre, Elizabeth A. Mazzotta (Larry) of Omaha, Neb., Dr. Carolyn M. DohertyFee (Michael) of Omaha, Mary M. Doherty of Omaha, Richard A. Doherty (Nicole) of Dallas, and Paul W. Doherty of Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Dr. Carolyn E. DiPonio (Michael), of Grayling, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and four brothers.
