Fun final seconds score win for Battlers

The Potter County Battlers headed to Selby Friday night for the Herried/Selby Wolverines Homecoming game. Under a cloudy, 50 degree sky, the team kicked off to the home team and the offense went to work.
Their first offensive drive started at the 20 and ended with a 15 yard run into the endzone, putting six on the board for the Wolverines. Colton Hall blocked the extra point kick, so the score stood with Herried/Selby on the board 0-6.
The Battlers ended up punting the ball away and the men in purple put their offense back into action. They didn’t get to show much of their stuff before Chayce Hall intercepted a pass at the Wolverine 18 yard line. A couple plays later the quarterback connected on a 19 yard pass with Michael Rausch who was wide open and into the endzone for a Potter County six points. Hall split the uprights and gave the visitors the lead at 7-6.
Before long the Battlers took over on downs on the Wolverine 49. A quarterback sack left Potter County in a fourth and really long, so it was punted away to the 18 yard line where Herried/Selby took over on offense.
With 4:11 left in the half, QB Brady VanderVorst was sacked by the Battlers, with a face mask violation that left him on the ground. The ambulance crew came to the field to help him off the field before the game got back into play. They ended the drive with a 39 yard field goal attempt that went wide left and the Battlers back in control of the ball.
The possession didn’t last long before they had to punt away, but they protected the one point lead as the teams went into the halftime break.
The second half got underway with the Wolverines jumping into the lead on a 48 yard punt return. The Battler defense retaliated by pushing the Wolverines a whole bunch of yards back for a fourth and forever situation.
The final quarter got underway. Potter County put together a big drive down the field, with Hall connecting with Tanner Heuer on a fun pass play into the corner of the endzone. The touchdown was called back on yet another holding penalty by the Battlers. They did their best to shake it off, when an off sides penalty balanced out five of the yards. On a crucial fourth and eight play, Coach Vern Smith called a time out and met on the field with his team. A pass play didn’t quite make the distance, so the Wolverines took over on downs at their own five yard line. With just over three minutes left, the defense kicked in hard and forced their opponents to punt. Putting a drive together to run the ball and burn some time, the Battlers put up a big pass play that many thought was brought down in the endzone, which turned out to be an interception. The next play, Ryan Sundberg pulled up a fumble and the team took over on the 15. A QB sack pulled the Battlers back then the refs added an intentional grounding penalty, so the team was left in a second and 24 with the quarterback tucking and running down to a first and goal on the three with 19 seconds remaining.
On the next play they put in a TD at the hands of Tanner Storer. Luke Vogel pulled in another two points, and the score bumped to 15-12 and the Battlers moved their record to 4-1, defeating one of the state’s top rated nine man teams in some thrilling final seconds.
The Battlers get a week off this week, and will play Eureka/Bowdle at home on Oct. 11.
Player update: Reports following the game on Brady VanderVorst’s condition sounded good. He was moving and suffered no serious injury. It was commented that he will probably be making some trips to the chiropractor, but will be fine and have a full recovery.
