Gettysburg’s emergency crews were called to East Whitlock Bay on Friday, Jan. 10. The fire department, ambulance, and sheriff were summoned by a 911 call of a fisherman who had broken through the ice with his vehicle on the bay west of town at Lake Oahe. The call came in at 7:20 p.m. from the fisherman, Terry Beiswanger of Mitchell, SD, who reported he was standing on the roof of his vehicle. Rescue units arrived and safely retrieved the man, who suffered no injuries and had crawled out the vehicle’s window before getting wet. The vehicle, a 1997 Chevy Suburban, rested in three feet of water and was recovered Sunday by Hoven Repair. Extreme caution is urged when driving on the ice at the river, and pay close attention to areas where currents are running.
