Ria peepJohanna Maria Antonia Peep (Ria), 93 of Spearfish, died quietly in her sleep on Oct.22, 2013.
Ria was born June 13, 1920 in Schoonhoven, (Holland) Netherlands to Johannis and Johanna (vanHonsewijk)Wewer.  Ria was the oldest of seven children.  Her family moved several times while she was growing up and it was while living in Doorn, Netherlands at the end of WWII that she met Staff Sgt. Charles L. Peep of Gettysburg, SD.  They fell in love and married on Dec. 28, 1945.  Ria soon found herself on a “war bride” ship headed for the U.S.
Charles and Ria lived for a few years in Rapid City, SD while Charles completed his degree at SDSMT.  The couple then moved to Gettysburg, SD where they farmed for many years and raised 13 children.  Many of those years were without the benefit of running water and indoor plumbing.  During their 59 year marriage, Charles and Ria moved several times, also living in Eagle Butte, SD, St. Joseph, MN, Juneau, AK, and Fairbanks, AK, before settling in Spearfish.  Wherever they lived, Ria was an active volunteer in her community and after the children were grown, became a master gardener and an accomplished quilter.  She especially loved working at the Georgeson Botanical Gardens on the UAF campus in Fairbanks and spending time with her quilting group.  Ria was an avid reader and instilled a great love of books/reading in all of her children.
Ria is survived by her children, Jeanette (Gene) Grasto, Florence Boyd, Charles A. (Tony) Peep, John Peep, Eric (Marlyn) Peep, Timothy Peep, Patricia Peep (Dennis Dunbar), Michael Peep, Geraldine Maltaverne, Susan Peep and Johanna (Tim) Gregoire; 14 grand-children; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rudolf (An) Wewer, Ton (Henny) Wewer; two sisters, Jearda Veldman, and Elisabeth (Louis) Naarstig; and many nieces and nephews.
