Local firefighters respond to Dewey County crash


Gettysburg firefighters were called to an accident May 8 to bring the jaws-of-life to a two vehicle crash.
The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 212 about three miles west of La Plant on Wednesday evening. The rescue crew from Gettysburg was called out around 6 p.m. local time.
The accident resulted in the death of an Eagle Butte couple. According to the SD Department of Public Safety, Robert Iron Wing, 74, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado north on a driveway approaching the intersection with Highway 212. He did not stop at the intersection before entering the highway, where his vehicle was struck by an eastbound 1991 Mack semi-truck driven by Arlo Wagner, 71, of Agar, S.D.
After the collision, both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch. Iron Wing and his wife, Francine Iron Wing, 67, died at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
Wagner was wearing a seat belt. He was not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Dewey County Sheriff’s Office and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement assisted.
