Maynard Westphal

Maynard Westphal obit photoMaynard “Corky” Westphal, age 84, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Huron and Gettysburg, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at his home. His funeral service was Sept. 23, at Hope Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Maynard Kenneth Westphal, son of Clarence and Maggie (Rausch) Westphal, was born on Dec. 17, 1928, at Gorman, SD. He graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1947.
On June 30, 1948, Maynard married Dorothy Engel in Gettysburg. He farmed in the Gettysburg area until 1976. He worked various jobs for a couple of  years until he began working for Federal Crop Insurance.
On Oct. 11, 1985, Maynard married Margaret Wosje McKinney in Huron. They lived in Gettysburg and Huron until December of 1986 and lived in Spearfish, SD, for a short time. In 1987 they moved to Kansas City, MO, where Maynard worked as a compliance investigator for Federal Crop Insurance. In 1993 when Maynard retired the couple moved to Huron.  They continued to live in Huron until December 2012 when they moved to Sioux Falls.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Huron and after the couple moved to Sioux Falls they attended Heritage Lutheran Church in Brandon. Maynard also was a member of Huron Rovers Camping Club.
His many interests included hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, playing cards, visiting with family and friends, and reading the “funny papers” along with Margaret.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Margaret of Sioux Falls; seven children, Mike (Vicky) Westphal of Gettysburg, Nick Westphal of Gettysburg, Brad (Carrie) Westphal of Norfolk, NE, Peggy (Todd) Cameron of Euless, TX, Les (Katie) McKinney of Sioux Falls, Kelly (Stacy) McKinney of Paola, KS, and Jeff (Vonnie) McKinney of Sioux Falls; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Kathie Westphal of Gettysburg; and two brothers, Richard Westphal of Seminole, OK, and Henry Westphal of Bath, SD.
Maynard was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters-in-law, Fay Westphal and Bea Westphal.
