Teens injured in accident

Two Gettysburg high school students learned a lesson about seat belts on Friday night.
Wear them.
Caleb Meinke and Treyson Drew, both juniors at GHS, were treated and released from the Avera Gettysburg Hospital following a single vehicle accident around 9:10 p.m. on Nov. 15.
Potter County Sheriff Curt Hamburger said the driver of the 2002 Ford pickup did not notice the stop sign at the junction of  316th Avenue and SD Highway 20 until it was too late, and the vehicle drove north across the highway and nose dived into the ditch. The pickup did not roll, but continued through a field and fishtailed.
It was reported that the men, who were not wearing seat belts, hit the windshield but were not ejected from the vehicle. Meinke hit the steering wheel and received head injuries, primarily to his lower teeth and lip, and was believed to have a concussion. Drew suffered a broken nose and a cut above the left eye.
No emergency crews were called to the scene to assist the accident victims.
A friend retrieved the victims from the accident site and brought them to the convenience store in Hoven, where they saw their Battler assistant football coach, Brady Hartung, who is also a paramedic. They were then taken to the hospital in Gettysburg where they were treated and released. Meinke also received medical treatment at Bismarck, ND for injuries to his mouth.
The Potter County Sheriff’s Department, Hoven Police Department, and Walworth County Deputy were called about the accident. Since the vehicle crossed the county line, the accident was investigated by the Walworth Sheriff’s Department.
According to a report from Walworth Chief Deputy Sheriff Joshua Boll, the driver was issued a citation for both stop sing and seatbelt violations, and the passenger was ticketed for a seatbelt violation. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and both men are hoped to be healed and back in play for the winter sports season.
