Veterans from the Gettysburg American Legion and VFW braved the cold wind Monday morning to put up the beautiful Avenue of Flags at the Potter County Courthouse. The flags, which once honored area veterans by draping their caskets, are flown near the Veterans Monument on Nov. 11 and again on Memorial Day. This year, Gettysburg residents woke to over an inch of snow on the ground, and the wind chills dropped to around zero that morning as volunteers worked to put up the flags. Pictured from left are Art Beringer, Dave Stroup, Larry Madsen, Ken Iverson, and Vic Beringer. Also helping were Don Hericks, Dennis Kessel, and Roy Combellick. A program was held at the school followed by a potluck lunch at the American Legion. The sun came out at noon to take the chill out of the air and the flags were retired that evening.
